Here we answer the questions we are frequently asked by our customers
This is a common occurrence and doesn’t always necessarily mean that any of the locking mechanisms in the door are faulting.
A quick test to determine if it is a mechanical fault would be to open the said door, whilst open lift the handle and then turn the key as if the door was closed and you were locking it.
If this process is smooth than it is likely to be a door alignment issue which is for more cost effective but requires the expertise of a Barnsley locksmith.
Our advice is to leave the broken key within the lock and do not attempt to force the key out – this could cause unnecessary damage to the lock and make the situation far worse.
Contact SheffLOCK immediately as we specialise in broken key removal.
This is more than likely a realignment issue where the door has dropped or sagged upon opening due to lack of usage – it is rarely due to a mechanical fault.
SheffLOCK can attend and quickly ensure your door is back to good working order – contact us now via 0114 4426200.
The standard national price to unlock a locked door is from £70. You can see our prices on our locksmith prices page. The price will depend on a number of factors such as:
- Time of day – a locksmith at 1 am in the morning will cost more than 1 pm
- Damaged lock or not – if the lock is damaged the job will be more expensive, rather than a locksmith just having to pick open a working lock
- Your Location – depends on how far the locksmith has to travel
It should take a SheffLOCK locksmith from 30 minutes to open a locked door, the time taken will depend on the type of lock you have fitted. For example, a basic euro cylinder will be quicker to unlock compared to a high-security anti-snap lock which will require specialist tools to open. Unlocking a lock fitted to a wooden door may take longer to open as most wooden doors will have 2 locks fitted to the door.
The lock will most likely need picking if you have locked out yourself out or lost your keys and need your door opening. This is a simple job for any well trained and experienced locksmith, some locksmiths can even unlock locked combination safes and vehicles.
Yes, a locksmith can open your lock without damaging it, most locksmiths use a non-destructive way to open your door to enter the property ensuring no damage is done to the lock or door.

A key is usually needed. A key is sometimes required to change a euro profile cylinder lock because the cam on the lock needs to be in line with the euro lock body to remove from the door.
Change the lock with no key
If you have no keys and the euro cylinder retaining screw is removed in the usual way, then the euro lock will NOT slide out as the cam is in the wrong position stopping the euro lock from being removed. Shefflock locksmiths can change the euro lock even if no key is available.
Remove the lock non-destructively
We have years of experience and specialist tools to align the cam in the correct position to remove the euro profile cylinder lock without damaging the door.
New keys for the new lock
Most new locks come with a few new keys. If you require more keys cutting we can do that in the same visit.
Fitting and changing any type of lock yourself is a risky thing to do.
You could be putting your property at risk of burglary if you fit the wrong lock or fit the right lock incorrectly, you could be at the risk of lock snapping by fitting the wrong size lock.
We have a number of locks that you can fit at home if you have the right dimensions.
